Hearty Roots is a great place to work. Located in the Hudson River Valley of New York, we grow 30 acres of certified organic vegetables per year on our 70-acre home farm and 50 acres of leased fields, and care for a flock of 2,000 laying hens, a group of pigs, and a flock of 16 sheep.


You will be part of a tight-knit crew, working cooperatively and having a great time as we move quickly in the fields with views of the Catskills. We are proud to be a CSA farm, providing 700 shares per week to families in our region and NYC, along with a large weekly delivery to a group of food pantries in NYC, and food for our Farm Market.

Assistant Field Manager

Assistant Field Manager

The Assistant Field Manager will work with the Field Manager (Karsten), the Farm Manager (Ben) and the team at the farm to ensure that we have healthy soils, thriving plants, and happy CSA members. 

 

The Assistant Field Manager will be involved with many aspects of the operation including: 

  • Working with tractors to prepare our soil for vegetables: using various tillage tools, forming straight beds, and leading planting teams.

  • Caring for our plants once they are in the field: operating cultivation tools, spraying (only organic products), and some irrigation.

  • Joining the harvest team to quickly and efficiently pick vegetables for our customers.

Applicants should plan to stay with us for at least two seasons, and hopefully longer, in order to learn our farm's systems and be able to put them into practice, and work to improve them.

The ideal candidate:

  • has at least one season of experience working on a farm;

  • is self-motivated to work quickly and efficiently, either alone or in a group, whether the task at hand is time sensitive or monotonous;

  • is positive, enthusiastic, and has the ability to see the big picture while paying close attention to detail;

  • is able to work all day on their feet lifting heavy things whether it’s raining, sweltering or beautiful out;

  • is able to lift 50 lbs.

Hours:

  • This is a year-round position, with a flexible schedule during the winter months.

  • 5-6 days/week, depending on the time of year.

  • We work 7–11 hours a day, depending on the time of year.

Compensation:

  • $17-19 / hour, depending on experience.

Livestock Assistant

Livestock Assistant

The Livestock Assistant will work with our chickens, pigs and sheep to produce excellent eggs and meat for our customers. 

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Caring for our flock of laying hens, including: rotation through pasture, feed ordering, maintaining mobile coops and feed/water infrastructure, raising new chicks, egg washing and packing.  

  • Caring for 10 feeder pigs during the spring / summer / fall, including: providing feed + water, rotations through the woods, and animal health.

  • Caring for our 17 ewes and their (to be born) lambs, including: rotation through pasture, lambing in April, and animal health.

 

When livestock duties are completed, the livestock coordinator may have the opportunity to participate in work on our vegetable crew. 

 

The ideal candidate:

  • has at least one season of experience working on farms with livestock, and/or an education related to raising livestock and pasture management;

  • has some experience with sheep and lambing;

  • is positive, enthusiastic, and has the ability to see the big picture while paying close attention to detail;

  • is able to work all day on their feet lifting heavy things whether it’s raining, sweltering or beautiful out;

  • is able to lift 50 lbs.  

 

Hours: 5-6 days/week, year round (with opportunities for vacation and other time off). We work 7–11 hours a day, depending on the time of year.

 

Compensation:

  • $16-18 / hour (depending on experience)

Team Leader - Vegetable Packing

Team Leader — Vegetable Packing

We're looking for a talented farmer who is ready to take on a leadership role. The Team Leader for Vegetable Packing, in addition to working together with the crew on many different farm tasks in the fields and greenhouses, also takes lead responsibility for a critical area of the farm's production: overseeing the washing and packing of the produce coming out of our fields as we prepare it for our CSA shares.  

Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing our bright, modern, food-safe packing barn, and keeping everything well organized;

  • Operating our washing equipment: a rinse conveyor, a barrel washer, greens spinner and sorting + spray tables;

  • Organizing and tracking the produce coming into the fields as it is divided up for our 700+ CSA members at 10 different drop off locations;

  • Managing crew members working alongside you in the packing house, training them to work quickly an efficiently and with an eye for quality;

  • Communicating well with other managers on the farm to update harvest teams on quantities needed and harvesters on quality standards.

 

The ideal candidate:

  • is able to take on responsibility for a major area of the farm's production independently and keep on task and on schedule;

  • has at least two seasons of experience working on a farm and some experience with washing + packing produce;

  • has a good head for numbers and can keep track of many different tasks simultaneously;

  • is positive, enthusiastic, and has the ability to see the big picture while paying close attention to detail;

  • can train and supervise other team members in the packing house and delegate tasks efficiently and clearly;

  • is able to lift 50 lbs.

 

Hours:

  • This position has a flexible start date of January - April 2023 and then is year-round, with a smaller work load in the winter months and opportunities for time off.

  • 5 days/week plus rotating weekend chores

  • We work 7 – 11 hours a day, depending on the time of year

 

Compensation:

  • $17-20 / hour, depending on experience

Farm Crew

Farm Crew Member

We're looking for people who love to farm and work with a cohesive team! As a Crew Member, you will be involved in almost all aspects of the farm: seeding, planting, cultivating, irrigation, pest and disease control, mowing, greenhouse work, animal care, and harvesting. Most days are full of many varied tasks. Members of our crew can expect to gain a strong understanding of all aspects of running a sustainable vegetable farm.

The ideal candidate:

  • has at least one season of experience working on a farm (higher wage for those who are more experienced);

  • is self-motivated to work quickly and efficiently, either alone or in a group, whether the task at hand is time sensitive or monotonous;

  • is positive, enthusiastic, and has the ability to see the big picture while paying close attention to detail;

  • is able to work all day on their feet lifting heavy things whether it’s raining, sweltering or beautiful out;

  • is able to lift 50 lbs.


Hours:

  • 5 days/week plus rotating weekend chores.

  • Typical schedule is 7am – 5pm with a one hour lunch break.


Compensation:

  • $16 – $17 / hour depending on experience

Farm Market Sales

Farm Market Retail Sales 

Hearty Roots Farm & Market is hiring for the 2023 Season! 

 

Farm Market Retail Sales Position: You will work alongside the Market Manager and retail staff in our busy on-site market. This can be a part-time or full-time job just in the Farm Market, or can be a full-time job that also includes work as a harvest crew member on our certified organic farm. 

 

We are looking for someone who can take direction well and has a willingness to work as part of a team to achieve daily tasks in a fast and efficient manner. This is a great opportunity to learn more about mid-scale certified organic farming, gain valuable experience in farmers market sales, and work alongside a dedicated team who work hard, but have fun while doing it. This position is fast paced and involves physically lifting large boxes of produce, maintaining market displays, washing, weighing and packing produce for sale in the market.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Opening the market: stocking produce, vegetable prep cleaning, stocking shelves, pricing new products.

  • Able to lift up to 50lb boxes, pack/unload boxes of produce for market set-up.

  • Interacting with our customers and CSA members, providing excellent customer service. A genuine interest in talking to the public about our products. Good communication skills/ customer service skills are a must.

  • Maintain knowledge of seasonal produce along with learning about the additional products we sell sourced from local farms in the Northeast. 

  • Ringing up customers, operating a point of sales system, handling cash, updating inventory stock, accepting deliveries throughout the day. 

  • Able to prioritize keeping the store looking fresh and fully stocked at all times. Create and maintain attractive signage and displays in the market.

  • Closing the market: putting away/storing fresh produce at the end of the day. Taking note of low inventory. End of day cleaning, sweeping/mopping. Light restocking for the next day. 

 

The Ideal Candidate: 

  • 1 season of farming experience or 1 year of experience in farmers market or retail sales. 

  • Can maintain quality control and has an eye for detail. 

  • Interest in learning about the community of farms and makers in the Hudson Valley.

  • An excellent communicator, enjoys engaging with customers and answering questions about produce, recipe suggestions, etc.

 

Schedule:

  • Hours: Our Market is open Wednesday–Fridays 11am–6pm (10am–7pm shift) & Saturday–Sunday 10am–4pm (9am–5pm shift).  

  • Option to work part-time in the Market and part-time on the farm crew for those who have some previous farming experience. 

  • Option for full-time or part-time hours and year round employment through the winter months. 

Compensation:

  • $16/hour

Farm Store Manager

Hearty Roots Market is a destination for high quality, local farm food, including our own certified organic produce, pasture-raised eggs and seedlings; alongside a carefully selected range of products from other regional farms including dairy, fruit, grains, preserves, meat, seedlings, and more. We are one of few local farm markets open year round. We have hundreds of dedicated, loyal customers who appreciate our high quality food, friendly staff, and clean, organized store.   The Farm Market Manager should be enthusiastic and well-organized. Responsibilities include: • Hiring, training, scheduling and managing staff for the Market; • Sourcing and receiving products from a variety of local suppliers, including many individual farms and producers and a few local distributors; • Working with our own farm team to communicate orders for our own farm produce, with the opportunity to join in harvesting some of the food for the Market if desired;  • Maintaining and updating systems for display, inventory, and pricing; • Tracking revenue and expenses to ensure the financial success of the Market and working with the farm owners on strategic planning; • Setting a great example for excellent customer service, and building strong relationships with both suppliers and customers; • Overseeing marketing for the Farm Market including social media; • Exploring opportunities to add new enterprises to the Market. The ideal candidate: • Is well organized, positive and hard-working, and has the ability to see the big picture while paying close attention to detail;  • has experience working at a similar farm market, natural foods market, or farm-to-table restaurant;   • is self-motivated to work quickly and efficiently; • has experience leading others and providing constructive feedback, setting a quick pace, and teaching new skills to less experienced co-workers; • is able to take on responsibility for a major area of the farm's operation independently and keep on task and on schedule; • is able to lift 50 lbs. Hours: • This is a year-round position • 5 days/week, some weekend hours are helpful but not required as a part of the regular schedule. • 40 hours/week, with some paid overtime available at the busiest times of year.
