Brooklyn CSA FAQs
As a CSA member, you now have a GrownBy member account. You can access GrownBy from a web browser at grownby.com or in the GrownBy mobile app, available in the Apple or Android app stores. Bookmark it! That's where you can:
check your order details and pickup schedule
reschedule or skip a week of pickups (see instructions below)
update your contact info and notification preferences
TIP: download the mobile app for push notifications that remind you when your pickup starts!
If you have forgotten your password, you can request it automatically; if you are still having trouble please get in touch with us at csa@heartyroots.com.
When you arrive at your pickup location, check in with one of the site volunteers. You are welcome to send a friend to pick up for you, they can give your name at pickup, no need to notify us in advance.
Pickups in Bay Ridge, Greenwood Heights, Greenpoint Williamsburg, and East Williamsburg Saturdays are "farm stand style" CSA pick-ups. The week's share contents will be set out in bulk crates, and a list of how much of each item you may take will be provided. Please bring your own bags/boxes to carry your share home.
At the Wednesday pickups for East Williamsburg CSA members, shares will be pre-packaged into cardboard boxes, ready for members to take home. Add-on shares will be set out separately, they will not be in the pre-packaged vegetable boxes.
We partner with four CSAs in Brooklyn. When you signed up, you chose your default location and pickup day. If you need a reminder of your default pickup day and time, check your email confirmation from when you signed up, or log in to your GrownBy member account and view your upcoming pick-up schedule at https://grownby.app/orders. If you give us at least 3 days notice, you can choose to pick up your share at a different location for a given week (see the next Q&A for instructions on how to do this).

Our seasonal schedule:
The 2025 main CSA season runs from June 4th through November 1st. For all locations, we will not be distributing shares during the week of July 4th and the week prior to the Labor Day holiday.
Wednesday pickup locations will not hold pickups on July 2nd or August 27th
Saturday pickup locations will not hold pickups on July 5th or August 30th
For Biweekly Share members: When you signed up for your Biweekly Share, you chose whether to be on the "A Week" or "B Week" schedule. Please note that the alternating pickup schedule will adjust around the skipped holiday weeks.
To see a full season calendar, with A Weeks, B Weeks, and Holiday Weeks specified, visit https://www.heartyroots.com/csa-calendar.
You have the option to schedule up to two "vacation weeks" during the season. When you claim a vacation week, your pickup for that week will be cancelled and you will receive a credit in your GrownBy account for the value of your skipped share, which will be automatically applied to your next CSA installment payment or CSA purchase. You can also use your account credit in our Farm Market if you're ever visiting us in the Hudson Valley!
You must process your vacation week claim at least 3 days before your scheduled pickup so that we can adjust the week's harvest plan (i.e. if you pick up Wednesday, make the change by Sunday night).
To claim a vacation week, sign into your GrownBy member account and go to the Orders/Schedule section. You will see a list of all of your upcoming pickup dates. Scroll to the date you would like to put on hold and click on the "Claim Vacation Week" button. If you have add-on shares, make sure you check off all items in your share. Click "Confirm Vacation" and your share will be put on hold for that date, and a credit for the value of your share(s) will be added to your account.
(You can also see a how-to video with step-by-step instructions here.)
If your CSA has two pickup days each week and you'd like to reschedule your share to the other pickup day on any given week, or if you want to pick up your share at one of the other Brooklyn CSAs that Hearty Roots parters with, you are welcome to do so as long as you give us advance notice through your GrownBy member account. Schedule changes must be made at least 3 days before the earliest of the two pickups.
To reschedule a week's pickup, sign into your member account and go to the Orders section of your account. You will see a list of all of your upcoming pickup dates. Scroll to the date you would like to change and click on the "Reschedule" button. Select the day/location you want to switch to in the dropdown menu. Please note: if you have add-on shares in addition to your vegetable share, you will need to input this change for each part of your overall share. Click "Save New Pickups" and your share(s) for that week will be delivered to the day and location you selected.
There are no options for late pickup at any of our Brooklyn locations, and we do not provide refunds or replacement shares for missed pickups. Please arrive on time to make sure you get your share, or send a friend to pick up for you if you're running late. If you miss your pickup, don't worry, the food won't go to waste! All unclaimed shares are donated to local community organizations at the end of each pickup.
The day before each pickup, you will receive an email with a complete list of the items you will find in that week's share, plus news from the farm, recipe ideas, produce storage tips, and info about the produce we grow. Please open your CSA emails from us! That is where we will communicate any last-minute changes to your pickup due to weather, delivery delays, etc. If you would like to receive your email updates at more than one email address, or if you are splitting your share with a friend or family member and you both want to get updates, you can add a second email address to your GrownBy member account profile in the "Email 2" field.
Biweekly members are on either the “A Week” or “B Week” schedule, which is set for the season. Here at the farm we cannot accommodate switching between A and B Week schedules.
You may be able to post to your CSA's Facebook page or Google Group to ask your fellow members if anyone is willing to swap weeks with you. Reach out to your local CSA for more information:

Yes, no problem! Either one of you can pick your share on any given week. Just give the name of the primary account holder (usually the person who initially signed up for the share) when you check in.
If you both want to receive our email newsletters (which tell you what will be in your share each week, plus news from the farm, recipe ideas, etc.), you can add a secondary email address to your GrownBy account. Log into the GrownBy account used to purchase your share, go to https://grownby.app/profile, and go to "Personal Information." Add your friend's email address to the "Email 2" field. Both email accounts will be added to our email list.
Our vegetables are very fresh when you receive them, but it definitely takes some care on your end to keep them that way once they make it to your kitchen. Taking a few moments to put away vegetables properly can be the difference between a limp head of lettuce and one that is still fresh and crisp a week after pickup.
Leafy greens should be stored in a way that keeps them from wilting, such as in a plastic produce bag, Tupperware container, or the high-humidity produce drawer in the fridge. They should go into the fridge promptly.
Root crops such as beets, carrots, turnips and radishes also need high humidity and cold temperatures to stay crunchy and crisp. Potatoes and sweet potatoes are more forgiving and can be stored in a cool, dark place, not necessarily in the fridge.
Winter squash actually store better at room temperature than anywhere else.
For more information about specific vegetables, these Veggie Info Sheets are an excellent resource. We will also send you storage tips and recipe ideas in your share list emails each week!
If you paid in full, you can cancel your share at any time with a week's notice. You can choose to have a credit issued for a future CSA or Farm Market purchase; or receive a refund for the value of the shares remaining in the season less processing fees.
If you pay with installments, you can cancel your payment plan at any time. The installment payments already made are non-refundable, and your cancellation will take effect at the beginning of the next month.
To cancel your share, or if you have any questions about this cancellation policy, please email us at csa@heartyroots.com.
Take a look at your location's CSA page on our website to see if the information you need is there: https://www.heartyroots.com/nyc-locations.
If not, email us! Reach out to Varick, our CSA membership manager, at csa@heartyroots.com.
