Hudson Valley Winter CSA pickups take place here on the farm:
Hearty Roots Community Farm
1822 Rt. 9, Germantown, NY
Saturdays 10am–1pm
Late pickup is available through the end of the day on Tuesday after your regularly scheduled pickup at our farm store.
or in Kingston at:
Village Grocery and Refillery
2 Jansen Ave., Kingston, NY 12401
Fridays 5–7pm
Late pickup is available on Saturdays from 8am–7pm at Village Grocery, but we encourage you to pick up on Friday evenings to get your vegetables at peak quality! Please note: if you are scheduled for a pickup at Village Grocery, late pickup is only available at Village Grocery. You can not pick up your share late at the farm if you were scheduled for Kingston pickup that week.
Our seasonal schedule:
The 2025-26 Winter Share pick-ups will take place on the following 8 Fridays (Kingston) and Saturdays (at the Farm) between December and early April (biweekly, with some holiday weeks skipped):
December 12/13th
January 9th/10th
January 23rd/24th
February 6th/7th
February 20th/21st
March 6th/7th
March 20th/21st
April 3rd/4th
Please remember that winter weather can be unpredictable! We will do our best to stick to this schedule, but if there is a major storm event and we decide it is not safe to have a CSA distribution on one of these dates, we will be sure to notify you and reschedule that share to another day. We will not offer refunds for rescheduled shares.
Pickup Logistics
Farm pickup:
If the weather is nice, CSA pickup will be held outside under the covered porch at the southwest corner of the Farm Market barn. If not, pickup will take place inside the barn, behind the farm store. Enter through the farm store and go to the back; go through the double doors at the back of the store and the next swinging door into the barn space, and a farm crew member will be there with your shares.
When you arrive, please check in with the farm crew member. You are welcome to send a friend to pick up for you, they can give your name at pickup, no need to notify us in advance.
Winter shares will be pre-packed in one of our farm's plastic crates. Please bring your own bags or a box to transfer your items into, you will not be able to take the farm's crates with you.
Eggs will be set out separately, they will not be in the vegetable crates.
Kingston pickup:
Please check in with a member of the Village Grocery staff. Shares at Village Grocery will be packed in cardboard boxes, ready to take home. Eggs will be available separately, so please request them with the grocery staff if you have an egg share.
You have the option to schedule up to three "vacation weeks" during the winter season. When you claim a vacation week, your pick-up for that week will be cancelled and you will receive a credit in your GrownBy account for the value of your skipped share (veggies and/or eggs), which can be applied to your next CSA installment payment or CSA purchase, or as payment in our farm store. (Vacation week credits are not refunds to your original payment method.)
IMPORTANT: You must submit your vacation week claim at least 3 days before your scheduled pickup so that we can adjust the week's harvest plan. You have the option to claim up to 3 vacation weeks over the course of this winter season.
To claim a vacation week, sign into your GrownBy member account and go to the Orders section at https://grownby.com/orders. You will see a list of all of your upcoming pickup dates. Scroll to the date you would like to put on hold and click on the "Claim Vacation Week" button. If you have an egg share in addition to your vegetable share, you will need to check the boxes next to both items. Click "Confirm Vacation" and your share will be put on hold for that date, and a credit for the value of your share(s) will be added to your account.
If you would like to cancel a vacation week that you have already scheduled, please reach out to us at csa@heartyroots.com. (Vacation week cancellations also require at least 3 days' notice.)
If you have to miss a pickup on short notice, you are welcome to send a friend to pick up your share for you! They can just give your name at check-in, no need to notify us in advance. Please let them know how pickup works, whether you get any add-on shares, and remind them to bring their own bags/boxes.
If you use ACH/direct bank payments to pay for your share, please email us at csa@heartyroots.com if you would like to apply farm credit to a transaction BEFORE the payment goes through.
Yes, no problem! Either one of you can pick your share on any given week. Just give the name of the primary account holder (usually the person who initially signed up for the share) when you check in.
If you want more than one person to receive our email newsletters (which tell you what will be in your share each week, plus news from the farm, recipe ideas, etc.), you can add a secondary email address to your GrownBy account. Log into the GrownBy account used to purchase your share, go to https://grownby.com/profile, and go to "Personal Information." Add your friend or family member's email address to the "Email 2" field. Both email accounts will be added to our email list.
If you would like to switch pickup locations on a given week, you can schedule that from your GrownBy Membership Dashboard. You must submit any location change request at least 3 days before the earlier of the two pickup dates.
To schedule a week’s pickup for a different location, sign into your member account and go to https://grownby.com/orders. You will see a list of all of your upcoming pickup dates. Scroll to the date you would like to change and click on the "Reschedule" button. Select the day/location you want to switch to in the dropdown menu. Please note if you have an egg share in addition to your vegetable share, you will need to input this change for your egg share as well as your vegetable share. Click "Save New Pickups" and your share(s) for that week will be delivered to the location you selected.
Farm Pickups:
If you miss a pickup and did not schedule a vacation hold for that week, we will hold your share at our Farm Market through the following Tuesday. You can stop by during the market's regular open hours (Saturday until 6pm; Sunday 10am – 4pm; Mon-Wed 10am – 6pm) and ask for your share at the register. Any shares not claimed by the end of the day Tuesday will be donated to a local community organization.
Kingston Pickups:
If you can't make it on Friday evenings, you can pick up your share during Village Grocery's open hours on Saturday (8am–7pm). We encourage you to pick up on Friday evenings to get your vegetables at peak quality!
Late pickup is only available at the location of your originally scheduled pickup each week. (Meaning if you miss your pickup at Village Grocery, you can not pick up your share late at the farm, and vice versa.)
Our vegetables are very fresh when you receive them, but it definitely takes some care on your end to keep them that way once they make it to your kitchen. Taking a few moments to put away vegetables properly can be the difference between a limp head of lettuce and one that is still fresh and crisp a week after pickup.
Leafy greens should be stored in a way that keeps them from wilting, such as in a plastic produce bag, Tupperware container, or the high-humidity produce drawer in the fridge. They should go into the fridge promptly.
Root crops such as beets, carrots, turnips and radishes also need high humidity and cold temperatures to stay crunchy and crisp. Potatoes and sweet potatoes are more forgiving and can be stored in a cool, dark place, not necessarily in the fridge.
Winter squash actually store better at room temperature than anywhere else.
For more information about specific vegetables, these Veggie Info Sheets are an excellent resource. And check your share list emails (sent the day before pickup) for more information about the vegetables in your share!
If you paid in full, you can cancel your share at any time with a week's notice. You can choose to have a credit issued for a future CSA or Farm Market purchase; or receive a refund for the value of the shares remaining in the season less processing fees.
If you pay with installments, you can cancel your payment plan at any time. The installment payments already made are non-refundable, and your cancellation will take effect at the beginning of the next month.
To cancel your share, or if you have any questions about this cancellation policy, please email us at csa@heartyroots.com.
