What's in a vegetable share?

At each pickup, members can expect to receive 6–8 types of certified organic vegetables grown right here at Hearty Roots Farm.

Each week we harvest a balance of our organic salad greens, root vegetables, cooking greens, seasonal vegetables (like tomatoes or peppers in the summer, and winter squash in the fall), herbs and more. You can see a list of vegetables that we are planting this year here.

A Weekly Share is designed for a medium sized household that cooks regularly, or a small household that cooks a lot of vegetables. A Biweekly Share contains the same amount of produce as the Weekly Share, but pickups occur every other week instead of every week. Smaller households and members looking for a smaller quantity often opt for a Biweekly Share. The vegetables are harvested the day or two before you receive them, so they will remain very fresh in the fridge until your next pickup!

Here are a few examples of what your share might look like throughout the season:

  • Spring — Arugula, Baby Lettuce Mix, Beets, Cauliflower, Japanese turnips, Kale, Radishes

  • Summer — Bell Peppers, Carrots, Fennel, Garlic, Potatoes, Sweet Corn, Tomatoes

  • Fall — Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Collard Greens, Kohlrabi, Leeks, Turnips, Winter Squash

Members will receive an email a day or two before pick up to let them know what will be in that week’s share.

What are in the add-on egg and fruit shares?

The egg shares come from our own Hearty Roots pasture-raised hens! If you add an egg share to your order, you can choose to get a dozen or a half-dozen eggs at each pickup. Our hens live out on the pasture, foraging in the grass, which gives their eggs amazing, nutrient-rich orange yolks. Read more about our eggs here

Fruit shares include two fruit items per pickup. We source the fruit from a handful of orchards and fruit growers in the Hudson Valley. While we source organic fruit when we can, there are very few certified organic fruit options in the Hudson Valley. Most of the fruit is grown conventionally, by farmers we know and trust.

Fruit availability varies from season to season. In summer you can expect peaches, blueberries, pears, nectarines, raspberries, cherries, and plums. In the fall, the share includes many varieties of apples, pears, cider, and more!

NOTE: If you would like to sign up for a weekly vegetable share with a biweekly egg and/or fruit share, please email us at csa@heartyroots.com to assist with your order.

How often will I receive a share?

The East Williamsburg CSA season runs from May 31st to October 28th. Within that period, members can choose:

  • Weekly Pickups

  • Biweekly Pickups (every other week)

    • There are two biweekly schedules available. "A Week" members start pick-ups in the first week of the season; "B Week" members will start picking up during the second week of the season.

      • UPDATE: "A Week" shares are now sold out!
We still have weekly shares and biweekly shares on the B Week schedule available. Email us at csa@heartyroots.com if you want to be put on a waitlist for an A Week share.

    • Check the full pick-up schedule before you sign up! Biweekly members will not be able to switch back and forth between A and B weeks during the season.

2023 CSA Calendar East Williamsburg.png

There are two holiday weeks this season when no shares will be delivered: the week before both the July 4th and Labor Day holidays.

PLEASE NOTE: The biweekly share schedule adjusts around those holiday weeks. To see a full list of dates for this year's CSA, check out our calendar here. A downloadable .ics file of your schedule, which you can import into your calendar of choice, will be provided in your welcome material.

In addition to these two holiday weeks, members may choose up to two additional "vacation" weeks, to make sure the CSA schedule fits your personal schedule! When you claim a vacation week, your pickup for that week is cancelled and you receive an account credit for the value of your skipped share (veggies, eggs, and/or fruit), which can be put toward your next CSA installment payment or CSA purchase. (Vacation week claims must be submitted at least 3 days before your scheduled pick-up.)

Logistics

CSA distributions take place on:

Wednesdays from 6pm–7:30pm (updated hours post-Labor Day)

or Saturdays from 10am–1pm

at Red Shed Community Garden

266 Skillman Avenue

Brooklyn, NY

You will select your default day/time when you sign up, but you can reschedule to the other day on any given week as long as you give advance notice.

Pickups are "farm stand style" during the main season. Vegetables will be delivered in bulk bins, and members will be able to pick out their own selections of each item (a list of how much of each item you may take will be provided). Members will need to bring their own bags/boxes each week to carry their shares home.

Members are required to volunteer for one shift at the CSA pickup site during the season, signing in members and helping to distribute the food. Information about how to sign up for your volunteer shift will be provided soon.

This membership fee is required in order to join this CSA. When you sign up for your share, the membership fee will be in the shop beneath the “Add-on Shares” section. Please make sure you add the East Williamsburg membership fee to your cart before you check out. If you do not pay for the membership fee when you place your order, your card on file will be charged for the amount of the membership fee prior to the start of the season. Please reach out to us at csa@heartyroots.com if you have any questions.

Ready to join? Here's how you sign up!

Sign up for your share in our GrownBy shop! We love GrownBy for two reasons: it allows you to manage your own account, check on your pick-up schedule, and gives you the option to change pick-up locations and dates. Also, the software is designed by a farmer-owned cooperative that was founded by Hearty Roots’ own Lindsey Lusher Shute! It works great as an app from the Apple or Android app stores, or can be used in a web browser.

If you purchased a share from us last year, you should already have an account set up. If you are a new member (welcome!), you will need to create an account as part of your purchase. Once you are logged in, you will be able to make all of your selections (choosing vegetable and/or egg shares, weekly or biweekly, and your primary pick-up location and time) before checkout.

If you sign up after the season has started, please note that we have a 3-day order cutoff window (so sign up by Sunday night for Wednesday pickups, or sign up by Wednesday night to pick up that same Saturday). If you have any questions or need any assistance, please contact us at csa@heartyroots.com.

Do you want to give a CSA share as a gift? Please email us at csa@heartyroots.com if you would like to give a share as a gift. We will help you set up your order, and we'll send you a gift certificate that you can give to your loved one (or a digital version that you can email them or print out at home). After the gift has been given, we will work with you to set up your gift recipient's member account and welcome them to our CSA.

Thank you for supporting our farm!
